    Book suggestions for June 2011

Post by lisa84 on Thu May 19, 2011 9:22 pm

To give us plenty of time to try and pick a book for our first month, I thought I would set up the suggestion post with plenty of time!

So, everyone who wants to join, if you add 1 suggestion each of a book you would like the group to read for our first month, then in a week or so, we will close to suggestions and set up a poll for everyone to vote for the book they would like (that isnt their own choice!!) and the book with the most votes will be the one we read next month

I cant think of anything to add, im stuck for books to read for myself.

It is yes Shona, the films are supposed to be good but I like to read the books first before watching them cos books are always better lolflag. I suppose if anyone likes it they could read the rest or leave them if they dont!

can i suggest nineteen minutes by Jodi Picoult

    Synopsis:

In this emotionally charged novel, Jodi Picoult delves beneath the surface of a small town to explore what it means to be different in our society.

In Sterling, New Hampshire, 17-year-old high school student Peter Houghton has endured years of verbal and physical abuse at the hands of classmates. His best friend, Josie Cormier, succumbed to peer pressure and now hangs out with the popular crowd that often instigates the harassment. One final incident of bullying sends Peter over the edge and leads him to commit an act of violence that forever changes the lives of Sterling’s residents.

Even those who were not inside the school that morning find their lives in an upheaval, including Alex Cormier. The superior court judge assigned to the Houghton case, Alex—whose daughter, Josie, witnessed the events that unfolded—must decide whether or not to step down. She’s torn between presiding over the biggest case of her career and knowing that doing so will cause an even wider chasm in her relationship with her emotionally fragile daughter. Josie, meanwhile, claims she can’t remember what happened in the last fatal minutes of Peter’s rampage. Or can she? And Peter’s parents, Lacy and Lewis Houghton, ceaselessly examine the past to see what they might have said or done to compel their son to such extremes. Nineteen Minutes also features the return of two of Jodi Picoult’s characters—defense attorney Jordan McAfee from The Pact and Salem Falls, and Patrick DuCharme, the intrepid detective introduced in Perfect Match.

Rich with psychological and social insight, Nineteen Minutes is a riveting, poignant, and thought-provoking novel that has at its center a haunting question. Do we ever really know someone?

I've just been out and bought some books that i have seen the films too, and i thought maybe it would be a good twist as opposed to just reading it, we could read/watch and compare.

    I have
My sisters Keeper : Jodi Picoult
P.S i love you : Cecelia Ahern ( i have read this before but would be willing to again)
The Time Travellers Wife : Audrey Niffenegger
Marley & Me : John Grogan

I have read my sisters keeper, love the book and the film!

The next book I have to read after the one I am on now is Marley and Me! The film makes me cry every time and I thought I'd read the book and see if its better than the film!

I like the idea of comparing books to films, lots more to disect then lolflag

I have seen all of the films before (and would def watch them all again) and because i enjoyed them all i wanted to read the books too. Will need to keep tissues handy cause i cried at all of them.. though not so much with my sisters keeper, but then i watched that while Dave was in the room sleeping and snoring loudly so couldnt hear it properly. Even Dave cried at Marley and Me lolflag
